Overview

Jessica Cisneros, a progressive Democrat running for Congress in Texas' 28th district, needed a compelling and functional website to support her campaign. As the WordPress developer, my role was to transform the designer's vision into a fully functional WordPress site, ensuring responsiveness, interactivity, and seamless user experience.

Scope & Constraints

The project scope included:

  • Implementing the UI designer's mockups in WordPress

  • Developing additional pages to match the established design

  • Creating custom interactions and functionality

  • Managing and optimizing all website assets

  • Ensuring mobile responsiveness and cross-browser compatibility

Key constraints:

  • Tight timeline to launch before campaign events

  • Limited budget for premium plugins or features

  • Need for easy content updates by non-technical campaign staff

  • Compliance with campaign finance regulations for donation processing

Process

The development process involved translating design mockups into a custom WordPress theme, implementing responsive layouts, creating custom interactions, coding custom functionality, optimizing assets, and ensuring cross-browser compatibility, followed by thorough testing and staff training.

Proposed Design

I submitted a design proposal for the website; however, the campaign ultimately chose a design created by Holly. Her design did a better job of capturing the progressive and youth-oriented style the Justice Democrats love for their candidates.

Theme Development and Asset management

Optimized and organized all images, videos, and other media assets. Created a custom theme based on the designer's mockups, utilizing HTML, CSS, and PHP.

Page Building

Developed additional pages to match the established design aesthetic.

Custom Functionality & Responsive Design

Implemented interactive elements and custom features using JavaScript and WordPress plugins. Ensured the website looked and functioned well on all device sizes.

Testing and Refinement

Conducted thorough testing across devices and browsers, making necessary adjustments.

Launch and Updates

Deployed the website and added content updates as the election became closer.

Outcome

Through the website the Justice democrats was able to accurately represented Jessica Cisneros' campaign message and visual brand. The design provided an intuitive navigation experience for visitors. We featured a mobile-responsive design that performed well on all devices. The website also integrated seamlessly with donation and volunteer sign-up systems. All in all we received positive feedback from the candidate and campaign team

The website played a crucial role in Jessica Cisneros' digital campaign strategy, effectively communicating her platform and engaging supporters online, thus meeting the primary goal of creating a central hub for her campaign's digital presence. Even though she didn't win, the project felt like a huge success.
